Caves

Wednesday May 10, 2017
Like Florida, Slovenia sits on limestone and has sinkholes and depressions called dolines. The difference is that in Slovenia there are mountains of limestone, a hugh snowmelt, and powerful rivers disolving the limestone into massive caves. Ceilings collapse forming natural bridges, valleys, and entrances to the caverns below. On our way to Piran, we stopped by Rakov Škocjan, a series of caves and natural bridges formed by the Rak River, near Cerknica. We found the trail from the top of the hole, down into the cavern and explored. Tom was able to get some beautiful shots of this facinating geological area.

Śkocjan Caves, near Divača, are massive - from the Reka River to ceiling over 400 feet in places. Stalagmites and stalactites, from floor and ceiling create magical shapes and pipe organs. The calcium carbonate forms a smooth layer like snow over the rocks. Our tour here is guided - with few opportunities for photography.
