Radovljica

Thursday May 4, 2017
Wildflowers everywhere and with them, the hum of bees. Radovljica, once a fortified hilltop town, is the beekeeping center of Slovenia. Strolling through the pedestrian old town, we find ourselves in an artist mecca. The waft of a flute drifting across the the square, scales being practiced on a piano, intermingle as we find the music school and the apiculture museum housed above.

Since the 16th century, beekeeping has been an intergral part of Slovenian agriculture. They designed hives with removable trays in amazing shapes, from men to mansions, and turned their artistic talents to decorating the front panels. The museum has the largest collection of these folk art panels in Slovenia, with themes ranging from the Bible and history to animals and everyday life - many laugh out loud funny.

I also love the tiny cages for carrying the queen from one hive to another.

There were several opportunities in town for fun photos!
