Lake Bohinj

Friday May 5, 2017
Less than 20 miles from Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, nestled in the Fuzina Alps, is a haven for cyclist and hikers. Driving up into the forest from the lake was magical with the light green birch, dark evergreens, and huge mossy boulders left by the glacier that carved this valley thousands of years ago. Up 553 manmade steps in the forest, we reached the Savica Waterfall, the largest in Slovenia, dropping 234 feet into a green pool of snowmelt.

I am facinated by the green water flowing over the white limestone bottom.

Our next stop is the Mostnica Gorge on the other side of the lake. How can a gorge be more gorgeous than Vintgar? Perhap different is a better word since Mostnica is more intimate and accessible. At times only a meter wide and 20 meters deep, it opens into wide, rather flat stretches, where you can sit and touch the river's icy power.

Wildflowers are everywhere.

Unfortunately, the picturesque Church of St John the Baptist was closed until mid June. Seeing the frescos of the white devil and angels with vampire teeth will have to wait for another visit.
